How to Mirror on Procreate

Procreate is a great tool for creating digital art, but did you know it also has a mirror tool?

It’s a great way to create symmetrical images in different styles. You can use this feature to add depth, symmetry, and balance to your work.

I'll show you how!

Here's a quick tutorial on how to use the procreate mirror tool to create your own symmetrical masterpieces. Freya taught us how to mirror in Procreate in her Procreate Masterclass and I’d like to share what I learned!

Procreate Symmetry Tool

You can find Procreate’s Symmetry Guide in your app’s Drawing Guide options.

You can check it out by opening your Actions Menu, then go to ‘canvas’, and select ‘Edit drawing guide’

Here you’ll see that we have different options for the Drawing Guide, and Symmetry is one of them.

Procreate’s symmetry tool allows you to draw simultaneously in two or more planes on your canvas.

There are 4 mirroring styles we can use on Procreate: vertical, horizontal, quadrant, and radial. Let’s talk about each of them.

Vertical

When you choose this style, you’ll see that there’s a line down the middle. The Vertical Symmetry guide allows us to draw on the left and right sides of your canvas at the same time.

You’ll see that when you draw on either side of your canvas, the same drawing is mirrored on the other side.

This can be used to easily draw things that are symmetrical or look the same on both sides, like the front of a car or some flower vase.

Horizontal

The Horizontal Symmetry guide is basically the same as the Vertical Symmetry guide, but this time it mirrors the top and bottom parts of the canvas instead of the sides.

You’ll see that there’s a horizontal line in the middle instead of the vertical one.

Quadrant

The Quadrant symmetry style divides your canvas into 4 sections and helps you paint on all 4 sections simultaneously.

This style is usually used in pattern designing and tile making. But of course, you can use this for different designs as well.

Radial

If you’re not satisfied with dividing your canvas into 4, then how about 8? When you draw on one of the sections, it will automatically replicate that drawing to the other sections.

Rotational Symmetry

Go back to your Drawing Guide, tap on ‘Options’ and turn on ‘Rotational Symmetry’.

Try drawing o a section. You’ll notice that the way it copies the drawing to the other segments is different.

During mirroring, the drawing is sometimes flipped depending on which section you’re looking at.

With rotational symmetry, your drawing on one section is just copied exactly the same as how you draw it on the other section.

Here’s what it looks like on both options when I draw a curve line from the center of the canvas through one of the sections.

I drew the blue line with the rotational symmetry off, and the pink line while rotational symmetry is turned on.

Rotational Symmetry is fun to play with, but it’s not suitable for patterns with connecting designs. You can use the other styles for that.

You can turn off the drawing assist by tapping on your layer, then uncheck ‘Drawing Assist’. Without this turned on, you can freely draw on your canvas like you normally do.

Now that you’ve learned how to mirror draw on Procreate, it’s time to have fun with it yourself! Try and experiment using the different symmetry styles so you’ll know which to use for your future works.

There are a lot of applications for this drawing guide, so feel free to use it the way you want to. It’s easy and fun to use if you want to draw quicker, or if you just want to draw something in this style.

How to Mirror on Procreate: A Comprehensive Guide

Procreate doesn’t have to be an application where you constantly have to redraw the same image. Mirroring can save you a lot of time when drawing in the program. This article will cover how to use the mirror function in Procreate and when it’s best to use it.

While drawing is intuitive enough in Procreate, there are times when it can be monotonous to redraw a familiar pattern. Rather than repeating the duplicate drawings, mirroring will simplify the process of reshaping and repeating your designs. It’s pretty similar to the ways you would mirror in Photoshop.

As with most functions in Procreate, there are familiar design processes that merely take some time to learn for a touch environment. Mirroring a design can be performed in more ways than one. Let’s address the different techniques you can use in the mobile application.

Mirroring in Procreate

Mirroring is the process of duplicating a design as a reflection, similar to seeing an object reflected in a mirror.

Procreate freeform mirroring

The simplest way to mirror in Procreate is using the Freeform function. Credit: SoftwareHow.

When you have a design you want to mirror, follow these steps:

  1. On the left side of the upper-menu bar, tap the arrow button. This action will open up a new menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. From that new menu, click on “Freeform.”
  3. With Freefrom activated, you can now edit your design’s shape. Use the controls to mirror the design horizontally or vertically, depending on the desired mirroring effect.

The mirroring technique is very similar to mirror in Photoshop, with Freefrom essentially mimicking the Free Transform function. Use this technique with duplicated layers to create a mirroring pattern. It’s an excellent tool for creating reflections or patterns in your design.

Symmetry in Procreate

Now let’s say that you want to create a mirror effect but more intricate one. Suppose you’re trying to recreate those trippy patterns of a rug or create compelling flower-like designs. Procreate makes this need for symmetry easier to attain with Symmetry Tools to accomplish this task.

The Symmetry Tools differ from the freeform mirroring by giving you faster results. This means that while you’re drawing on one side of the screen, the same design can be mirrored on the other half. This can make mirroring not only easier but more fun to experiment with.

Here’s the step-by-step process on how to use Procreate’s Symmetry Tools:

  1. Find the wrench icon on the top toolbar and click it to open Settings. This will bring up a pop-up menu. With this menu open, tap on the canvas and then switch on the Drawing Guide button from the menu.
  2. Below the Drawing Guide button, there should be a button that says Edit Drawing Guide. Tap that button, and a drawing symmetry guide appear, starting with a vertical guide as its default. Thin lines should now be visible on your canvas as the guide.
  3. Customize the guide so that it fits your design ideas for Mirroring. The options included should be Isometric, 2D Grid, Perspective, and Symmetry. The right choice depends on your design. Isometric, for example, is an excellent choice for creating patterns and circles. Symmetry, however, is handy for keeping everything in your designs symmetrical.

Once you’ve found the correct settings, start drawing on your canvas to see how it functions with the symmetry guides. It can take some practice, so be patient in trying to find the right guide that suits your projects.

Mirrored or Rotational

The symmetry guides are somewhat unique in how they function. Mirror Symmetry flips and reflects your drawings within the guide area. But you don’t just have to settle for simple mirroring.

There’s also Rotational Symmetry which is different as it rotates rather than flips with its reflection. This can allow designs to go around an area rather than simply mirror. The Rotational Symmetry can be used vertically or horizontally and be toggled on and off in the symmetry settings.

Types of Designs To Create With Symmetry Tools

You can easily create many types of designs with the aid of symmetry tools. Here are just a few examples of what can be designed with them:

  • Rug Designs: Rugs and carpets often have this reflected nature in the uniformity of the design. Creating these types of designs is easier with the help of symmetrical reflection doing more repetitious work for you.
  • Website Wallpaper: Wallpaper images placed on websites often tend to have a repeating pattern to better accommodate specific monitors. When using symmetry, this repeated pattern can be easier to apply and find the right cut-off point.
  • Package Design: Some packaging contains special designs that often repeat and have patterns. Some examples include the unique designs of Amazon Prime shipping tape or the bones on boxes from Chewy. The replication can be easily accomplished with some symmetry involved.
  • Reflections: Use the symmetry tools to create simple of reflection of your object. Then separate that reflection into its own layer and play with the opacity and blending modes to better tune the fall-off of the reflections.
  • Kaleidoscope: Replicating the iconic eye-pleasing toy or the trippy effects of a 1970s music video is easy with the mirroring and symmetry tools.

Mirroring Procreate Onto a Mac or PC

While working with the mirror functions in Procreate can work fine on your iPad or iPhone, you may like to try it out on your desktop computer. Thankfully, there is a way to do this with the help of AirDroid Cast. This feature is used for casting your mobile apps onto your desktop computer, be it a Mac or PC.

Procreate Airdroid Website

The AirDroid Cast application can be found on the AirDroid website. Credit: AirDroid.

It should be noted that this feature doesn’t exactly install Procreate on your desktop. What it does is transfer your mobile device to the computer’s screen, similar to how you’d plug your laptop into a television. It’s a handy function if you find the screensize of the iPad or iPhone too limited and mirror your designs onto another screen.

Here’s how to go about casting from your mobile device to the computer:

  1. On your Mac or PC desktop computer, download and install the AirDroid Cast application. You can find it on the official website here: https://www.airdroid.com/download/airdroid-cast/
  2. After installing, open AirDroid Cast and ensure that the AirPlay Server is functioning. There should be a text at the bottom that says “AirPlay Server: Running.” If it’s running, you’ll have the option to turn your computer into an AirPlay receiver.
  1. Make sure your desktop computer and mobile device with Procreate is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. On your mobile device, find the Control Center panel and tap Screen Mirroring. You should then see your desktop computer listed as the screens to connect towards. Select that device and your computer should start casting your mobile screen.

This process essentially turns your iPad into a makeshift drawing tablet that connects to your computer monitor. Depending on the monitor you’re using, this can be an easier way to draw in Procreate. Going between the iPad and a larger screen can be handy for making sure you’re creating the most detailed of designs.

What does casting have to do with mirroring? Aside from the word association, this process can help you get used to drawing with symmetry functions. Using the AirDroid Cast can be a solid preparation for getting more accustomed to the mirror functions and how to work with them.

Tips and Tricks

  • Layers Are Your Friend: Before getting deep into using the symmetry tools, try out a simple Freeform style mirroring. It could make the difference between a fast design and one that you end up spending too much time configuring.
  • Get The Guides Right: Consider the type of design you’re working with and how the guides should appear. If you’re creating something like pixel artwork meant to replicate classic video games, it would make sense to have a thicker grid.
  • Experiment: The symmetry tools are not as intuitive as the simple Freeform mirroring. It will take some time to find the right combination of guides and mirroring to get the desired effect. You may not even know what effect works until you try it out. Be patient and play around with the tools until you’re comfortable to tackle more complex designs.

A: Procreate does have a symmetry tool for reflecting your drawings. Enabling the Drawing Guide can help create the right effect for creating automatic symmetry. The symmetry can either flip or rotate your design depending on the options you select.

Layers can be mirrored through a combination of duplication and transformation. Start by duplicating the layer you want to mirror. Then select that duplicated layer and choose Freeform to use the transformation tools to flip the replicated design. This will create a mirror effect when placed next to your original layer.

In the same way that you can mirror your drawings with the symmetry tool, you can do the same thing with text as well. All you have to do is enable the symmetry tools and drawing guides to start creating text that will automatically be replicated.

The mirror mode in Procreate is sometimes referred to as Mirror Symmetry. It can be enabled by opening the settings and enabling the Drawing Guide and selecting Symmetry. You can then start designing as the designs are replicated and mirrored depending on the settings you select.

What is the Symmetry Tool and Why Use it?

Procreate has a very handy set of tools that make it easy to create symmetrical lines, shapes, and patterns in many different ways. It’s ideal for making mandalas, snowflakes, or any geometric designs.

This tool is especially handy for graphic designers but artists can also find it useful whenever they need to mirror an image with a reflection or draw symmetrical facial features, like the eyes, for example.

If you’ve ever seen a picture of a butterfly and wondered how they drew it so accurately they probably used the symmetry tools in Procreate.

How to Find the Symmetry Settings (overview)

I’ll presume you’re an absolute beginner, so let’s start from scratch.

Make a New Canvas

You need to be in the Procreate gallery. If your App doesn’t open in the Gallery straight away, you’ll see the Gallery tab at the top left-hand side of your Procreate interface. Give it a tap.

Tap the Plus symbol at the top right of your screen.

Choose your preset canvas size or tap the black rectangular icon, at the top right of the dropdown menu, and make a custom canvas.

I’ll tap the regular screen size 2048 x 1536px and the interface opens with your blank canvas.

Open the Drawing Guide

The symmetry tools are found inside the Drawing Guide setting.

Tap the Wrench icon to open the Actions menu.

Tap the Canvas icon at the top right of the dropdown menu

Scan down and open the Drawing Guide toggle button.

You’ll see a 2D grid overlay automatically appear on your canvas. Ignore it.

Tap the Edit Drawing Guide to open the Drawing Guide interface.

There are 4 guides to choose from at the bottom of your canvas. By default, Procreate opens on the first 2D Grid option.

Skim along and tap the Symmetry button. Your grid disappears. Now your canvas will show a center line with two dots, one blue and one green.

If this is the first time you’ve used the Symmetry tool it will be set to Vertical by default

You’ll see two adjustment sliders beneath, one for opacity, one for your line thickness, and another tab for Options

Tap the Options tab to open your symmetry Guide Options dropdown menu

You will see the following 4 symmetry choices:

  • Vertical
  • Horizontal
  • Quadrant
  • Radial

Beneath those, you’ll see two toggles. One for Rotational Symmetry and the other for Assisted Drawing

IMPORTANT: Switch the Assisted Drawing toggle to ON.

Without the assisted drawing feature switched on your symmetry will not function.

Before we continue, I want to point out one feature that might catch you unawares.

Beneath the Done button, at the top right, you’ll notice a thin, colored, slider-bar. This bar is too close to the Done button and it’s very easy to tap it accidentally.

This slider controls the color of your guidelines and wouldn’t you know it, it’s set at white beneath the Done button.

If you hit the slider when you tap the button, your guide will vanish. This is very easy to do when you use your finger. If it happens to you, now you know why. Slide the pointer back to the left and your guidelines will reappear.

All set? Let’s go through each symmetry setting to see how they function.

How to Use the 4 Symmetry Tools in Procreate

Each tool has its own functionality, we will start with the vertical setting.

How to use the Vertical Symmetry Tool

With the default Vertical option selected and the Assisted Drawing toggled to ON, Tap Done to open the canvas in full-screen mode.

Your symmetry line runs vertically in the center of your screen and any mark you make will be mirrored on the opposite side of that line.

Draw a simple shape and it will automatically mirror itself. Hold your finger down on the line and it will smooth your line perfectly. This is the Quickshape tool at work.

How to use the Horizontal Tool

The Horizontal symmetry tool works in exactly the same way as the vertical tool. The only difference is the change of axis.

You can use the blue and green cursors in the same way, except this time, when you reset the symmetry line cursors they will default to the horizontal position. Simple.

How to use the Quadrant Tool

The Quadrant tool divides your canvas into four quarters. Draw anything in one quadrant and the line, or shape, mirrors in the other three

Draw a shape in the top left quadrant and it will reflect along the vertical axis to mirror the image in the right quadrant.

Likewise, each image is mirrored in the bottom quadrants.

How to use the Radial Tool

If you think the Quadrant mode is fun to use, you’ll enjoy the Radial tool more.

The Radial Tool divides your canvas into 8 equidistant sections. If you view your radials on a square canvas you will see them more clearly.

As well as the vertical and horizontal lines, there are two diagonal symmetry lines, making it look like a star.

If you want to make Mandalas or snowflakes, this tool is for you. Each section mirrors its neighbors perfectly. It’s like making a kaleidoscope.

How to Use Rotational Symmetry Setting

Back in Drawing Guides and under the Options > Guide Options, you will see the Rotational Symmetry toggle button. Switch it to ON.

This function works in a slightly different way. Instead of making a mirror image, it repeats the exact image in each section. One follows the other in the same direction.

Perhaps, it’s easier to show you how it works by drawing an arrow.

Each arrow is repeated in sequence and placed perfectly within each section (Triangle). They follow each other.

Compare the same arrow drawn with the Rotational Symmetry turned off, and the Radial sections mirror each arrow. Quite a difference.

These are very useful functions for certain types of art and design. Mandalas are particularly popular in coloring books and selling your designs as digital downloads could be a nice sideline.

How to Move the Symmetry Lines and Reset Them

If you wish to adjust the placing of your center line go back to the Drawing Guides settings.

Tap the Wrench to open the Actions menu, and tap Edit Drawing Guide once more.

Hold the blue spot (cursor) anywhere on your canvas and adjust the angle by sliding the green dot to the left or right.

A quick tap on either dot will reset your symmetry line back to its default position.

Tap Done to save the settings and exit the page. You will return to the full-screen canvas. Continue to draw using your new symmetry line as your guide.

How to Open a New Layer and Use Drawing Assist

So far you have drawn on one layer. To add another layer, tap the Layers icon at the top right of the screen (two squares).

It opens as a new layer without presets. If you wish to continue with the symmetry tool, tap Layer 2, and a list of commands opens up in a menu to the left.

Scan down and tap Drawing Assist. You will see ‘Assisted’ written beneath Layer 2, it’s now activated. Use it as before.

You can turn the Drawing Assist on and off by tapping any layer, but to adjust your symmetry cursors you must go back via the Wrench > Actions > Edit Drawing Guide sequence.

How to Adjust the Opacity and Thickness of Your Guidelines

You might wish to adjust the opacity, color, or thickness of your guidelines. This is how its done.

You’ll see the Opacity and Thickness sliders at the bottom of the Drawing Guides interface.

Don’t mistake the function of these sliders. They adjust the size and opacity of your guidelines only, not to adjust your brush lines.

The guidelines are to help you draw and don’t appear in your final saved image. They can be any thickness, opacity, or color, it makes no difference.

Change the color in the top color slider. If you recall I warned you about accidentally tapping the color slider when you tap the Done button.

As I alluded to before, setting your color slider to white on a white background is pointless. On the other hand, if you have a dark image, white guidelines would be very helpful.

The same is true in reverse, of course, so there are good reasons you might want to change the colors as you go along.

You’ll find these posts helpful too:

Symmetry Tool: Final Thoughts

Things are only simple when someone pointed them out. Using the symmetry tools are straight forward when you know how to set things up and use the adjustments.

It will take a little practice to get the hang of things, but not long. You’ll be making fun and interesting designs in no time.

If you need some Procreate lessons to get to grips with this versatile app, you should follow a Procreate course for beginners. That’s what I did.
