How To Update Discord On Non-Ubuntu Linux Distros

Han Rodríguez

If, like me, you use Discord a lot, you surely have come across this pop-up window when trying to launch the app and a new version has been released.

If you’re reading this, I am going to assume you’re running a Linux distro that is not based on Ubuntu and when you opened the drop-down menu you did not see your distro on the list but rather a generic Linux .tar.gz download or an option to figure it out later yourself, whatever that means. Surely, it must be as easy as downloading the file and double-clicking it, right?

It turns out it is not as easy as it seems, because we will have to place the binaries where they belong by ourselves. Luckily, while messier than Windows’, the Linux file system is very well structured and 11 lines of code in our terminal are all it takes to update Discord.

Steps

TL;DR: At the end of this article you can find a GitHub Gist that you can use to update Discord if you installed it manually in the first place (i.e. not using a package manager). If you didn’t, follow the instructions in the “Remove Previous Installation (Package Manager)” section. Then, you can use the script below.

Remove Previous Versions — Package Manager

If you installed Discord from repositories like RPM Fusion using a package manager (e.g. dnf ) but want to install it manually because the repositories have not been updated, uninstall it with your package manager and take note of any dependencies that are being uninstalled because you will have to install them later.

Remove Previous Versions — Manual Removal

For this tutorial, I am assuming all files and links are in the paths described in the Discord 0.0.18 .desktop file.

  • Remove the binaries from add-on applications folder
  • Remove symbolic link from shared data directory
  • Remove symbolic link from binary data folder
  • Remove desktop entry
  • Remove icon
  • (optional) Remove all Discord user data for a clean installation

Install New Version

  • Extract binaries to add-on applications folder
  • Create symbolic link in shared data directory
  • Create symbolic link in binary data folder
  • Copy desktop entry
  • Copy icon

Finally, if you uninstalled the previous version using a package manager, you should now install all the dependencies that were uninstalled with it.

If you removed it manually, I suggest installing the following dependencies: GConf2 , libappindicator , libcxx , libcxxabi , libdbusmenu-gtk2 , libindicator . Do note that these might be different for your system, I am listing the ones I got from dnf in Fedora 36 when uninstalling Discord 0.0.17 but if you cannot find some of them, you might have to look up what their equivalents are for your OS.
